<intro>
Any team that wants to win the World Series needs someone who can record the last three outs. It is a unique job that is not suited for everybody, which makes it that much worse when one of them gets hurt. The problem is compounded when the injured player is a perennial All-Star.

During an early spring training game between the Red Sox and Twins, Minnesota saw their prized closer, Joe Nathan, taken out of the game early; never a good sign. The Twins eventually went on to lose to Boston 9-3 in the split-squad matchup. The good news for Minnesota was starting pitcher, Francisco Liriano’s start. He threw two innings giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two.

Last October, Nathan had elbow surgery. In Saturday’s game against the Red Sox, he was pulled out of the game after walking two of the three batters he faced. Nathan reported soreness and tightness in the same elbow that recently had surgery. There was no word following the game on Nathan’s condition, only that he will be re-evaluated Sunday.

Joe Nathan has been one of the best closers in the game the past six seasons, recording no less than 36 saves in each. He owns a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3:1 and has stayed relatively healthy throughout his 10-year career. Aside from the first two seasons as a pro, his ERA has stayed below three and is more often than not below two. Nathan will be 36 after this season.
</intro>

    <intro>

Joe Mauer, widely regarded as the best catcher (if not the best player) in baseball, is preparing to negotiate a contract extension with the Minnesota Twins. His agent, Ron Shapiro, recently arrived in Fort Meyers, Fla. to meet with team executives.

Mauer, 26, has already smoothed his path to Cooperstown. He has won three batting titles, including a .365 average in 2009, when he was voted the Most Valuable Player of the American League. And he has done this while playing the game's most grueling position. Among his rack of Silver Slugger awards rest two Gold Gloves. He is as close to a perfect player as one can find.

The success or failure of those negotiations make for an interesting case study and commentary on the business of baseball today.

Fans in general and purists in particular fear that Mauer is too big to fit into Minnesota's wallet. Even worse, fans fear that the New York Yankees lurk in the woods, ready to snatch the superstar.

In a time and sport littered with financial inequity, the Yankees have an unlimited budget, startling revenues, and a lust for big names. Their budget often surpasses $200 million, and Mauer is precisely the kind of player and person the Steinbrenners covet.

The Twins' total payroll in 2009 was around $65 million - less than half of what it will probably take to keep Mauer. Both New York teams and the Boston Red Sox will surely flex their checkbooks if the stellar backstop indeed becomes a free agent.

No doubt the Twins will bank on loyalty, nostalgia, and location (Mauer was born and raised in St. Paul) in their sales pitch - while hoping for a historic hometown discount.
</intro>

    <intro>
Francisco Liriano pitched well Thursday for Leones in the Dominican Winter League final. Is this a sign of what Liriano could potentially do?

The Series between Leones and Gigantes for the Dominican Winter League Championship ended last night in San Francisco de Macoris. The series went down to the Ninth Game. Taking the mound for Leones was Francisco Liriano,Leones ace and Minnesota Twins Pitcher. Liriano was an all star for the Twins in 2006,but had a disapointing 2009.

Liriano pitched well from the get go for Leones.Liriano struck out ten Major and Minor League batters as he cruised for five innings. The biggest difference in Liriano's pitching has been that his velocity is around 95 mph on his fastball. The same as it was in 2006. Liriano only gave up one hit as Leones one the Dominican League championship.Liriano improved his record to3-1 in seven playoff starts and also has a 0.49 playoff ERA. Leones will play the champions of Puerto Rico,Mexico, and Venezuela in the Caribean Series starting February 2 in Margarita Island,Venezuela.

If Liriano continues to pitch well in the Caribean Series he may just be that much better next season.Will Liriano pitch well next season?Only time will tell.

    <intro>
The AL Central, on paper, looked like the easiest division to win.

None of the teams were among the top of the American League. The Red Sox and Yankees dominated headlines in the East. The defending AL Champion Rays were also in the East. The Angels were the the team in the West. The Rangers had quite a season until their September fade in the West.

Nobody really thought about the Central. And why should they? The Royals have not been relevant since the Reagan Administration. The Indians traded away two Cy Young winners in consecutive years and one of their offensive stars, and in the end Eric Wedge lost his managerial job. The White Sox were in it for a while, but waved the white flag in late August.

And so the Tigers had a comfortable 7 game lead with less than a month to go, The Twins were a .500 club and lost Justin Morneau for the season. The playoff races seemed dormant in every division this year. On the weekend of September 18-20, there were some last gasps for a few teams. The Giants faced the NL West leading Dodgers. The Rangers played the Angels. The Twins faced the Tigers. It seemed like each trailing team needed a sweep to stay alive. The Dodgers won 2, the Angels won 2, and the Giants and Rangers faded. The Twins won 2 in their series, not a sweep, but enough to stay alive. The series included an interesting fly ball in the dome that gave the Twins a bit of an advantage in one of the games. It's the last year for the dome. It was like a parting gift.

The Tigers and Twins met again in the final week of the season, this time, in Detroit. Detroit could have clinched the division with 3 wins. The first game was rained out, forcing a double header. The Twins won game 1 in extra innings. Justin Verlander, Detroit's ace, pitched the nightcap, and the Tigers won another close match. Detroit won game three. For game 4, a Tiger win would have clinched the division. The Twins won the game and the fireworks show at the end with too many hit batters and included the ejection of Jeremy Bonderman.

Going into the final weekend, the Twins played the Royals and the Tigers played the White Sox. If the Tigers won two they had another chance to clinch the division. Minnesota won all 3, finishing the season 17-4 over the last 21 games. The Tigers lost the first two to Chicago, but won on the last day to force a playoff. The Twins were down three with four to play. No team had ever come back from that defecit.

For the 9th time in MLB history, there was a one game playoff to decide the division. It was the third year in a row that a division ended in a tie. The Tigers took an early 3-0 lead. Miguel Cabrera's two run home run contributed to that lead. But just like the rest of the season, the Twins battled back. Trailing 3-2, Orlando Cabrera added to the all Cabrera day by hitting a two run home run to give the Twins a lead. The Tigers tied it up to send it to extras. Both teams scored in the 10th, to keep the game going. Both teams had runners thrown out at the plate in extra innings.

In the bottom of the 12th, the Twins finally completed one of the greatest comebacks in MLB history. They won 6-5 and for their efforts, they get to face the Yankees in the ALDS. The Yankees are 7-0 vs. the Twins this year, so many fans probably do not give the Twins a chance. Better not tell the Twins. They tend to take challenges and meet them.
</intro>

    <intro>
This is what a pennant race should look like.

The Tigers and Twins faced off in the first of a four game set that could go a long way in deciding the AL Central. Know the old saying day late, dollar short? Due to rain, the game was a day late. But the action and intensity was not a dollar short. It was worth the wait.

Personally, as a baseball fan, I have been looking forward to this series. I previewed it from the middle of the weekend, checked the standings again on Sunday, and continued to wait with anticipation after the rain on Monday.

Detroit scored first when Gerald Laird was hit by a pitch and scored on a Ramon Santiago single. Minnesota tied it when Matt Tolbert scored on Denard Span's sacrifice fly. The game remained tied into the 9th, when the intensity went up a notch.

Alexi Casilla opened the top of the inning with a double, the Twins sacrificed him to third. But and attempted suicide squeeze resulted in a double play. Carlos Guillen walked to start the home half of the 9th. The Tigers bunted pinch runner Wilkin Ramirez to second, but he remained there as the potential winning run for the final two outs.

Onto extra innings, when Denard Span led off the 10th with a single, and moved up to second and later to third on two wild pitches. Orlando Cabrera, who has playoff experience and knows about comebacks from his time with the 2004 Red Sox, singled in Span. Cabrera later scored on a Delmon Young sacrifice fly, and the insurance run proved to be important.

Joe Nathan came in to shut the door, but was greeted with a Curtis Granderson home run. But Nathan settled down and got the save. Two weeks ago, the Tigers led the division by 7 games. The lead is down to 1 as the Twins win, 3-1. You can't spell Twins without win.
</intro>

    <intro>
There will be a winner in the AL Central, because there has to be...

Late attempts to disqualify both the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins and let the Texas Rangers in have failed (it could happen... Kansas City could trade places with Texas and move to the West, it works for the Chiefs)

So next week, the Twins and Tigers will meet in a four game series that will probably determine the AL Central winner. It's a step down from 2006, when these two teams met in the ALCS with the World Series on the line. The Tigers won that match up, kind of settling the score from when the Twins beat the Tigers in the 1987 ALCS.

But it seems in 2009 this is the only pennant race to close out the season. Before we get to Monday's game, there are the weekend matchups. Detroit plays Chicago while Minnesota plays Kansas City. In those four games, there are nine possible results that have five different outcomes. Then the big series begins, producing five more outcomes. The end result is that after these 6 games, Minnesota could possibly lead by 4, or trail by 8; the current defecit is at 2 games. They say in baseball that you have to take it one game at a time. That's for the players. As fans, here's what could happen over the next 6 games:

1st possible result: Twins win 2 against the Royals to complete a sweep, while the Tigers drop 2 more to the White Sox.

1st outcome : The two teams enter the big series in a tie for the AL Central.

If this happens, and the two teams are tied, a sweep by either team in the four game series would win the Central. A Twins sweep in this case is the only way they could get to a 4 game lead. Even without a sweep, the team that wins 3 would go into the final weekend with a commanding 2 game lead. Should the teams split next week's series, they would go into the final weekend still in a tie. The Twins end the season hosting the Royals while the Tigers host the White Sox.

2nd possible result: Twins win 2 over the Royals while the Tigers split with the Sox

3rd possible result: Twins split with the Royals, while the Tigers drop 2 to Sox.

2nd outcome (same for both results): Tigers hold on to a 1 game lead.

In this scenario, a sweep by the Twins in the four game series would give them a 3 game lead going into the final weekend. If the Twins take 3 out of 4, then they would have a 1 game lead. A split would keep the Tiger lead at 1, while the Tigers would have the 3 game lead if they won 3 out of 4. A Tiger sweep clinches the Central.

4th possible result: Both teams win the next 2

5th possible result: Both teams split the next 2

6th possible result: Both teams lose the next 2

All 3 lead to the 3rd outcome: The series starts with a 2 game lead for Detroit.

This is where it starts to get desperate for the Twins, because Detroit could win the Central by winning 3 out of 4, and not needing the sweep. However, a Minnesota sweep still gives them a 2 game lead going into the final weekend. If the Twins take 3 out of 4, the two teams would go into the final weekend in a tie. A split would keep the Detroit lead at 2 games.

7th possible result: Detroit wins the next 2 but the Twins split the 2

8th possible result: Detroit splits and the Twins lose 2

4th outcome: Detroit begins the big series with a 3 game lead

And the curtain would be closing on the Minnesota season. Still possible to get the lead of the AL Central with a sweep, and be 1 game back if they win 3 out of 4. But a split would leave the Tiger lead at 3 games going into that last weekend. And the other results would clinch the AL Central for the Tigers.

9th possible result: Detroit wins the next 2 and Minnesota loses the next 2.

5th outcome: Detroit had a 4 game lead starting the not so big series.

With this outcome, a split would give Detroit the playoff spot. Minnesota could cut the lead to 2 by winning 3 games, and would tie if they swept the series.

Detroit will be home for the big series. Still, Minnesota is clearly the team with momentum. And the saying goes that momentum is only as good as tomorrow's starting pitcher. The Probables...

Monday's game has Nick Blackburn of the Twins facing Rick Porcello for the Tigers.

Tuesday Brian Duensing goes for Minnesota while Detroit has their ace, Justin Verlander.

Wednesday the Twins have Carl Pavano scheduled. Detroit is listed as TBA.

Not sure if TBA is any relation to the player to be named later, the one that is in so many trades.

The grand prize for all of this? A trip to New York to face the Yankees in the ALDS. A question for the Yankees, would they rather face a Tiger team struggling to the finish or a Twins team that made a late season surge? Personally, I still am rooting for a tie, and a Monday game in Minnesota for a one game playoff. Followed by a Monday Night battle with Brett Favre hosting his former Green Bay team. You can't script it better than that.
</intro>

    <intro>
Todd Tichenor umpired a game in Minnesota on Thursday May 28.

Todd danced. Todd twirled as he threw out one catcher, then a manager, followed by the other catcher, then the other manager. Todd really put on a show for the paying fans.

And, by the way, the Red Sox managed to split the series against the Twins.

Todd looked like the overzealous rookie cop that can't wait to write out a ticket. Or a young teacher that wants to prove they are tough on discipline by sending someone to detention.

I'm not sure if there were any fans in Minnesota that came out to see Todd. When I go to the ballpark, the best officiated games are the ones where I do not know who the umpire is, nor do I have a desire to look up the name after a game that goes without incident. But this was not the case in this game. Besides the number of ejections it was interesting to see both catchers ejected in separate incidents. Catchers and umpires have a unique relationship. They spend lots of time together behind the plate. A catcher, when batting, may not argue a strike call hoping that his pitcher will get the same call in the next half inning. An umpire may take a break after a catcher gets hit with a foul ball to give the catcher a chance to recover. And a catcher may make an extra visit to the mound if the umpire gets hit.

It just wasn't a friendly day to be behind the plate in the 7th. The normal catcher/umpire relationship was bruised in both separate ejections. Minnesota backstop Mark Redmond argued as Boston's Bailey scored on a sacrifice fly (the only Boston run that was not one of two Jason Varitek home runs) and seemed to have a case that Bailey was out. Boston's captain showed his leadership by arguing balls and strikes and protecting his pitcher, Josh Beckett, who was screaming from the mound. Apparently Todd's hearing is not as strong as his desire to be the show.

</intro>

    <intro>
As the Twins wait for there new stadium there stuck in the Metrodome

Ever since the Minnesota Twins received public approval in 2006 for a new ballpark, team President Dave St. Peter has been fielding calls from companies wanting to talk about naming rights for the stadium.

On Monday, the Twins hit the bull's-eye when the team announced tentative agreement on a 25-year marketing deal with Target Corp. to call the 40,000-seat stadium Target Field.

While specific financial terms weren't disclosed, several sports analysts around the country estimated the deal could be worth $100 million or more over the 25 years, and one sports marketing analyst said it could be worth $8 million a year or more.

"We really focused on Target," St. Peter said Monday. "We really had only serious discussions with one company, and that was Target."

The $517 million stadium project, financed mainly with public money, will open in 2010.

The $8 million figure "would not seem extravagant," said Steven Korenblat, who helped Citibank negotiate a $20 million-a-year naming rights deal for the New York Mets' stadium, which opens next year. "It certainly is not, given the benchmark on the East Coast."

But other sports marketing observers said the Twins deal was more likely in the range of $5 million to $6 million a year.

"I tend to go toward the lower end ... given the small market, a slowing economy and the fact the Twins haven't won the World Series in a long time," said Brad Sarna of Absolutebrand, a consulting firm in Milwaukee. He said he would not be surprised if the deal were worth as little as $3 million a year.

Under terms of the team's deal with the state, the Twins will pay for the upkeep of the stadium. Selling the naming rights was a concession granted to the team to help offset the maintenance costs. The team said sale of the naming rights, therefore, is a private business transaction, and so the terms need not be made public.

Target audience

The agreement means Target -- which paid about $18 million in the early 1990s for the naming rights to the Target Center basketball arena where the NBA's Timberwolves play -- will have a dominant position in downtown Minneapolis.

"Between the baseball team and the basketball team and the whole corridor to downtown, Target has firmly entrenched themselves," said Jeff Knapple, a naming rights deals expert at Wasserman Media Group LLC in Los Angeles. He estimates the naming rights sold for $5 million to $6 million a year.

David M. Carter, executive director of the University of Southern California's Sports Business Institute, said it is unusual for a sponsor to have naming rights at two adjacent major venues.

Carter said the stadium deal suggests Target is seeking to make an even stronger connection to fans in its home market.

"It's further evidence of our commitment to the local community and providing community support," said Susan Kahn, a spokeswoman for Target. "This is in our back yard. This is an extra-special commitment to our hometown."

But Target, which operates about 1,650 stores in 47 states, is also constantly expanding. Most recently, it announced plans to open a permanent store in New York City.

Although Target is a household name in Minnesota, analysts said the deal is a good move by the company to extend its brand awareness.

"The point is not to improve your brand awareness in this market," said Jeff Klinefelter, a senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray who follows Target. "It is to drive your brand awareness nationally."

Klinefelter said Target spends about 2 percent of its annual sales on marketing, or roughly $1.2 billion a year.

Analysts said that in the long run the money spent on the naming rights would be well worth the national and international coverage Target Field will receive in coming years -- especially if the Twins make the playoffs or, as expected, host the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 2014.

Other elements

Apart from naming rights, the team and Target will work on designing other aspects of the stadium, including what will be called Target Plaza, a pedestrian bridge and public gathering space connecting the ballpark to downtown Minneapolis, said Kevin Smith, a Twins spokesman.

In addition to naming rights for the ballpark and plaza, the Twins and Target will work to develop an array of marketing and promotional programs, Smith said.

The Minnesota Ballpark Authority, public owner of the park, is overseeing design, construction and operation of the stadium and plaza.

Dan Kenney, the Ballpark Authority's executive director, said the agency is pleased with the deal because it will help in the development of the area surrounding the park.

"We think Target Field is a good name," Kenney said Monday. "We're excited about Target's intentions."

    <intro>

The Twins made a move last night, trading away SS Jason Bartlett and SP Matt Garza for OF Delmon Young. Minor league player Eduardo Morlan was also sent to Tampa for infielder Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie.

There’s not much to judge this trade on, until we see what kind of careers Garza and Young have. I am sad to see Bartlett go after all the time we invested in him. It seemed like he was close to realizing his potential, both as a hitter and fielder. I’m not sure who the Twins have in mind now for the SS position. It’ll be interesting and probably frustrating to watch the potential musical infield chairs next season.
</intro>
